Our Passion for Latin
Carpe Diem is Latin for 'Seize the Day'.
Studies have shown that children who learn a second language have better cognitive skills, which includes listening skills, thinking more abstractly and developing better pronunciation in later life as a result of how the mind processes learning a new language. Having a second language also has social benefits as well as career advantages.
We use Latin phrases frequently at Carpe Diem. It is a language that we strongly believe should be kept alive, as it is embedded into the fabric of many of today's modern languages.
With 50 percent of English deriving from Latin and over 80 percent of English polysyllabic words having a Latin origin, it is inherent in the English language and therefore remains relevant in many ways.
This benefit extends to other languages, as 90 percent of the five ‘romance’ languages; French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian emanates from Latin.
We do not offer Latin as a taught subject, but given its historical, classical and liturgical importance, we hope our students will enjoy being exposed to it whilst learning at our centers.
